I hope you have been enjoying the last few blogs on PCOS. If you missed the first two, you can check them out HERE and HERE. On the last blog I promised I was going to give you the supplement that outperforms Metformin for PCOS.
That supplement is called berberine. The study was published in 2012 in the European Journal of Endocrinology (2012;166:99-105). It followed 89 Chinese women who received one of the following:
All the study participants were also educated in nutrition and instructed to eat a lower fat and lower carbohydrate diet. They were also advised to do 30 minutes of moderate to intense exercise each day, but this was not monitored.
The Study Results:
The results showed that berberine, Metformin and placebo (an inert sugar pill) all came out about the same in terms of weight loss.
What this tells us is that the diet and exercise changes make the biggest differences in weight, NOT drugs and supplements. But it also tells us some other interesting things.
Both Metformin and berberine performed equally in their ability to improve blood sugar tolerance and insulin levels.
Think about that for a second, a natural herbal compound did as well as Metformin at fixing one of the major causes/contributing factors in PCOS.
The biggest difference came in key metabolic parameters like SHBG levels (a key hormonal marker of PCOS), cholesterol, and triglycerides. Berberine out-shined Metformin in this area.
Also, while weight loss was the same in the Metformin and berberine group, body changes were not. The berberine caused greater losses in abdominal fat compared to Metformin!!
Women taking berberine lost more inches in their waist. Berberine seemed to help women regain the female hourglass shape.
Any woman with PCOS knows that is a big struggle and a very big deal!
What other supplements?
I can tell you first hand I have seen berberine in action in the clinic as well. It is the real deal. It works reliably and well for PCOS.
However, there are a few other things I want to tell you about that work.
One is alpha lipoic acid or ALA. 600mg of this compound per day adds to berberine's amazing ability to control insulin.
Vitex or Chaste Berry is the other compound. 500-1500mg of this herb can help the brain's ability to respond to female hormones normally, undoing much of the real cause of PCOS.
A few more things to be aware of are that PCOS women have lower levels of zinc and vitamin D. So, you probably want to use them as well.
